The Cessnock District Rescue Squad was formed with the aim of supplying specialized equipment and trained personnel to co-operate and assist police, ambulance and Fire Brigade in Cessnock/Kum Kum and surrounding districts in the event of road, rail, aircraft, industrial, domestic and natural emergencies. Available 24 hours a day, they work at the scene of an emergency under the command of the senior officer present of whichever service is in charge. In its 30 year history, it has been called on for cliff rescue, cutting victims free from car wreckage, providing floodlights at a fire and simple things like securing a roof after a severe storm.

In April 1992, the Cessnock Rescue Squad received a NSW Police Citation in recognition of assistance (totaling over 148 man-hours over a three day period) given to police in a Bellbird murder case.
